The Valmiki Ramayana Translation Project is engaged in the production of a major, new collaborative scholarly translation of this ancient literary masterpiece. The work, of which five volumes have already been published by the Princeton University Press is unique in a number of ways. It is the first and thus far the only translation of the Valmiki Ramayana to be based on the critically edited text of the poem produced according to scientific principles by the scholars of the Ramayana Department of the Oriental Institute of Baroda. In addition, it is the only translation of this great work in any language to provide a dense and comprehensive scholarly annotation in which, among numerous other text-critical, stylistic, substantive and linguistic matters, the insights, arguments, and interpretations of the rich tradition of Sanskrit commentators on the Ramayana are brought to the attention of scholars. Each volume corresponds to one of the poem’s seven kandas and is provided with an extensive scholarly introduction discussing that kanda and its role in the larger epic.
